TRY A "GREENIE" [back to top]
 |
| "A Greenie a day keeps the vet at bay" |
"Greenies"
are delicious & nutritious dog treats which help prevent dental
plaque build-up. It's like having a toothbrush in every bone. An
independent research study found that dogs given just one "Greenie" per
day showed a significant decrease in dental plaque accumulation over
dogs that did not use the product.
"Greenies"
are shaped like toothbrushes, & range in size from petite to jumbo,
to meet the needs of various sized dogs. Developed by a veterinarian
& clinical nutritionist, "Greenies" have no by-products,
preservatives, artificial flavors or colors. They are easily digested
& available at Cimarron at a price significantly lower than local
pet supply stores.
There
is no better disease prevention than good dental care. Poor dental
health is painful and can lead to liver, kidney, & heart disease.
It can shorten your dog or cat's life by 2-4 years.
KIDNEY DISEASE KILLS - EARLY DETECTION ADDS YEARS [back to top]
Kidney
disease is the 2nd most common cause of death from illness in dogs. The
kidney's filter your dog's entire blood volume 48 times each day to
remove toxins. As a result, they are exposed to potentially damaging
factors from many disease conditions such as dental disease, skin
infections, heartworm infection, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Conventional
tests give us important information about your pet's health, but they
can only detect late kidney disease after more than 2/3 of the kidney
tissue is damaged. As a consequence, early kidney damage can occur
without any visible signs of illness.
We
now have a new screening test, the Early Renel Detection (ERD), that
detects kidney damage in dogs much earlier than before. This simple,
5-minute urine test can extend & improve your dog's life.
If
the test is negative, that's great news! It means your dog has no
indication of early kidney damage. If the test is positive, the test
has helped us detect kidney damage early so that we have a better
chance to identify the cause & treat the disease process.
Be
safe & catch a urine sample from your pet. You may drop it off
& our lab will run the ERD test, or you may bring it with you when
your pet comes in for a 6 month physical exam.
FECAL SCREENING [back to top]
Did
you know that 26% of dog feces specimens contain disease organisims
associated with bowel disease? 16% of dog feces specimens contain
disease organisms capable of infecting the pet, pet owner & other
human members of the family. These transmitted diseases include Giardia
& Salmonella & several others. You may drop off a fecal sample
& our lab will check for parasites, or bring a fresh fecal sample
with you when you bring your pet in to see Dr. Bohnke.
CATS AND CHRONIC VOMITING OR DIARRHEA [back to top]
Inflammatory
Bowel Disease (IBD), is a very common condition in our pets. Most types
of IBD in cats can be successfully treated. Signs of this disease are
usually associated with chronic intermittent vomiting, and/or
intermittent diarrhea. Dietary and medical management is easier to
achieve than ever before. A cat that is fed a good quality diet should
have a firm, consistent stool. Anything else may be a sign of illness.
HEARTWORM PREVENTION [back to top]
A cherry treat given monthly will preven this devastating and fatal disease. Since treatment of Heartworm disease can be fatal as well, a montly treat is cheap insurance against Heartworm Disease and its consequences.

- If you hear a rattlesnake, keep your dog close to you & move away from the snake as soon as you locate it.

CATS AND SECOND HAND SMOKE [back to top]
Research done at Tufts University found that cats living in households
with smokers have an increased risk of acquiring feline lymphoma. This
cancer kills 3/4 of its victims within a year. Cats exposed to second
hand smoke have more than double the risk of acquiring this disease.
Felines rarely get lung cancer, yet cats exposed to cigarette smoke for
five years or more, had more than triple the risk of getting cancer
than did cats who lived in smoke-free homes. In a two-smoker household,
the risk went up by a factor of 4. Feline Asthma also increases significantly in cats exposed to second hand smoke.
CATS AND ARTHRITIS PAIN [back to top]
Arthritis is much more common in aging cats than has been previously
recognized. If you observe your cat
limping, jumping less frequently or taking lower perches, your feline friend may be suffering from arthritis pain. 50% of cats over the age of 10 years have radiographic signs of arthritis of the elbows, hips, knees, and especially the spine. There is a new and very effective drug that can by used
safely in cats for long term pain management. Help your older cat find her inner kitten again!
